Here are some of our most commonly asked questions about Occupational Therapy and KidSensations.

Q: I think my child could benefit from occupational therapy. How do I get started?
A: Should you feel occupational therapy is a service that would benefit your child, contact KidSensations to discuss your concerns with the therapist, and schedule an initial evaluation. Upon completion of the evaluation, a separate conference time will be scheduled to discuss findings and any recommendations.

Following the evaluation conference, if treatment is indicated, a regularly-scheduled appointment time will be established for your child. The occupational therapist will provide your child's pediatrician or specialist with a copy of the report and a prescription for therapy will be obtained.

Q: I What Insurance networks are you a part of or accept?
A: There are many different insurance providers and differing plans within a single insurance carrier. Most companies have a website that lists benefits as well as providers of medical services. Checking your policy, on-line or by calling the number on the back of your insurance card, will give each family a good idea of what services are included and any limitations or special circumstances.

KidSensations is an In-Network provider for the insurance companies Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Humana, MediCaid, and Superior. We will file as an out-of-network provider for most insurance.

For families without insurance coverage, a discounted rate is offered if the cost is out of pocket for the family.

Q: What kinds of things are children doing during a typical therapy session?
A: Each child's sessions are individualized to the specific areas identified at evaluation. Some common threads are:

  • Fun, internally motivated movement activities
  • Carefully chosen and modified activities designed to challenge each child while remaining fun and enhancing a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem.
  • Play on moving equipment to address skills such as balance, core body strength, and whole body coordination
  • Games and activities to promote strengthening of trunk, large muscle groups, and often hands and fingers as well
  • Crafts and projects to promote fine motor skills and task organization
  • Games, puzzles, and activities to address and improve visual perceptual, visual motor and ocular motor skills
  • Activities involving multi-step movement tasks to improve sequencing and memory, as well as motor skills and upper extremity coordination.
  • If applicable, practice with self-care &/or self-feeding skills, incorporated naturally into sessions

Q: Are there things I can do with my child at home to help with improving skills?
A: Yes. As your child becomes familiar with the activities and games during therapy sessions, the therapist will recommend these, as well as additional exercises &/or activities to do at home, as it fits into your schedule. Regular participation in home programs can significantly shorten duration of therapy and speed progress.

Q: I have more questions, but I'm not sure I want to schedule an evaluation.
A: If you would like to discuss your child's status, contact us at KidSensations, and the therapist can talk further with you to determine what, if any, the next step should be.
